What does forgiveness mean?

Many of us live under the misapprehension that when we forgive we are acknowledging what was done to us was acceptable. That is not true.  Forgiveness does not sanction the wrong doing.

However, not to forgive allows the perpetrator a double impact on our lives. We have been hurt or wronged by the incident or circumstance and then we choose to allow the perpetrator to further impact our lives by holding on to our unforgiveness.

I’m sure you have heard the expression, “Unforgiveness is like brewing poison for the perpetrator but drinking it yourself.”

Forgiveness, on the other hand, means despite what was done to you, you are strong enough to release the perpetrator and let go. This will protect you from the consequences of holding onto those grudges.
